A sucker for documentaries that explore the most niche, off-the-beaten-path slices of life, Abby Hagan’s film, Punderneath it All, about the world of puns, punning, and pun slams, is freaking catnip.

In standard documentary format, Hagan digs into this highly specific realm, though it’s the people who make the movie. Participants include doctoral students, competitive chess players, people who love wordplay, those looking to create intentional communities, even folks who are dicks about what is and isn’t technically a pun.

Goofy and silly, it’s ultimately a sweet story about a bunch of outsiders finding a place to belong, being supported, and generally living their best lives amongst like minded weirdos. [Grade: B]
