Zack Snyder's 'Army Of The Dead' Trailer Executes A Heist In Zombified Las Vegas

A heist movie, but make it zombies. I’ve heard much worse ideas, and that’s the basic premise behind Zack Snyder’s upcoming Netflix movie, Army of the Dead. While this first trailer doesn’t reveal much, it teases action, the undead, and the myriad problems that arise when those two elements collide. In short, it looks like a fine time. At a certain point a franchise has to reinvent itself or risk doing the same thing time and time again to diminishing returns, sinking into obscurity all the while. That’s where the mutant backwoods cannibal saga Wrong Turn finds itself in 2021. With six films in can, the increasingly gory DTV series hasn’t had an installment since 2014. Train to Busan took over the world back in 2016. It wowed audiences when it premiered at Cannes, broke box office records in South Korea, and became one of the most acclaimed horror movies in recent memory. Almost immediately chatter of an American remake began. Though rumors died down for a while, things apparently kept moving forward. While it’s not a project I was ever particularly excited about, today the production did something that definitely kicks up my anticipation quite a bit: they hired Timo Tjahjanto to direct.

Video game movies have a bad rap, which, let’s be honest, is largely earned. As much as I enjoy the Resident Evil movies and a handful of others, there are some absolute dogs. Yet every time a new adaptation comes out, we collectively ask, “Is this the one that breaks the curse?” Who knows if it will, but the latest attempt to translate Mortal Kombat to the big screen has a lot going for it and this first trailer looks pretty damn rad.

'Willy's Wonderland' (2021) Movie Review

Nicolas Cage battling evil animatronics come to life. That’s it, that’s the pitch. Based on that, most people probably know whether or not they want to watch Willy’s Wonderland. I’m a simple man and I’ve watched movies for so much less. And as someone who grew up traumatized by the heyday of hellish robotic children’s entertainment of this ilk, the kind featured at establishments like ShowBiz Pizza (and to a lesser degree, for me at least, Chuck E. Cheese), this hits very close to home indeed.

'Lapsis' (2020) Movie Review

Using the lens of science fiction to examine current real-world predicaments and ills is a staple of the genre. Writer/director Noah Hutton’s indie sci-fi outing Lapsis settles neatly into this category, looking into the pitfalls of the gig economy, while sparing enough time to hurl barbs at the healthcare industry that forces people to choose between massive debt and medical attention. And all of this in the guise of a dystopian mystery, a sci-fi story that executes big ideas on a budget with inventiveness and creativity.

'PVT CHAT' (2021) Movie Review

Writer/director Ben Howzie’s grimy indie drama, PVT CHAT, takes some big swings and has grand ambitions on a miniscule budget. A little bit mystery, a little bit thriller, it aims to unravel the tricky nature of connection in the modern age. The examination of how we communicate through screens, and how the personas we craft online bleed over into the tactile world, is especially poignant in this moment.
