Dreams really do come true. COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on movies an movie releases, especially big blockbusters. But there’s still plenty of room for oddball films to slip through and get a release. And what’s more oddball than a Nicolas Cage-starring sci-fi saga where humanity has to use martial arts to defeat alien invaders? The Cage-fronted Jiu Jitsu is one of our most-anticipated movies of 2020 (and any year to be honest), and now we know when we can see it because it has a release date.
According to reports, Jiu Jitsu will receive a U.S. release on November 20. Presumably, and like most of Nicolas Cage’s recent output, this will be a primarily VOD release. Possibly there could be some drive-in screens or other limited theatrical engagements, but most of us are going to watch this on our couches.
In addition to sounding appropriately bonkers for modern era Cage, Jiu Jitsu also assembled a crazy awesome cast of VOD badasses. It’s fronted by Alain Moussi, star of the recent Kickboxer revamps. There’s also Tony freakin’ Jaa and Frank Grillo, JuJu Chan (Wu Assassins), Rick Yune (Olympus Has Fallen), and Marie Avgeropoulos (The 100). I would be amped for this cast no matter the movie, but fighting aliens with martial arts just sweetens the deal.
Here’s a synopsis:
Every six years, an ancient order of expert Jiu Jitsu fighters faces a vicious alien in a battle to protect Earth. For thousands of years, the fighters that protect Earth have played by the rules…until now. When celebrated war hero Jake Barnes (Moussi) is defeated by Brax, the Alien invader, the future of humanity hangs in the balance. Injured and suffering from amnesia, Jake is rescued by Wylie (Cage), Keung (Jaa), Harrigan (Grillo) and his team of fellow Jiu Jitsu fighters. They must help Jake to regain his strength in order to band together and defeat Brax in an epic battle that will once again determine the fate of mankind.
I mean, bless the twisted mind of whoever came up with this madness. And apparently we can thank writer Jim McGrath and writer/director Dimitri Logothetis. McGrath has a long writing resume, featuring the likes of Simon and Simon and the Father Dowling Mysteries, which only makes me more excited. More recently, he and Logothetis also worked together on Kickboxer: Retaliation.
So, mark your calendars. On November 20, 2020, we get to see Nicolas Cage battle aliens with martial arts in Jiu Jitsu. I’ve never been happier to write a sentence in my life.
