I don’t know what movie is the one that’s going to get me back into a theater despite the global pandemic. But after this trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune, we have a new contender. Just watch.
This Dune trailer has it all: Arakis, Paul Atreides, that all-time great cast, still suits, the Bene Gesserit, an epic scope, butthole-looking sand worms…we could go on. But it all looks great. I’ve said it before, after the likes of Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, if Villeneuve wants to keep playing around in the sci-fi sandbox, I’m game to watch, and hot damn, that still stands.
Herbert’s 1965 novel is widely regarded as unfilmable. (Warts and all, I am one of those people who likes David Lynch’s 1984 version, and also wishes we got to see Alejandro Jodorowsky’s vision. We can just pretend that TV miniseries didn’t happen.) We will have to wait and see on that front, but this looks like it has the massive, sprawling scale and near-endless resources to pull it off. This is also the first of two movies, which is probably for the best because Dune is a whole lot of story and world building.
Here’s the synopsis
A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
The cast, which is on full display in this trailer, is otherworldly nuts. It stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Chang Chen, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa, and tons more. Basically, everyone working in every last department is one of if not the top of their field. This is an insane collection of movie making talent end to end.
I’m sure there will be all kinds of breakdowns and infinitesimal dissections that examine every frame of this, diagraming characters and scenes. And I will probably read many of them. But I’m not going to try to do one of my own because I’m lazy and others are far more knowledgeable in that regard. Enjoy.
