'Project Power' Trailer: Jamie Foxx And Joseph Gordon-Levitt Team Up For Netflix's Latest Action Movie

Yeah, sure, why the hell not? I’d seriously never heard of Project Power, which sounds like a reality show about electrical engineers, until yesterday. But an action movie starring Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, about a drug that gives users five-minutes of a surprise power? (Maybe you’ll be invisible, maybe you’re super strong.) I’ll watch that. Check out the first trailer from the upcoming Netflix movie below.

This Project Power trailer looks like it could go a couple ways. It could be legitimately good, it could ho-hum, or it could be atrocious. (Predicting a movie might be good, okay, or bad isn’t much of a stance, is it?) That’s a gamble I’m willing to take with a couple hours of my life.

One thing, this has reportedly been finished since 2018. Movies get delayed for all kinds of reasons, but a film sitting on the shelf for that long often doesn’t bode well.

This definitely fits with Netflix’s MO. They pop up with a movie no one really knew anything about, it has a few big names in the cast, it could easily have, in a pre-COVID-19 world, probably get some form of a theatrical release. But it’s also not a big enough deal to hold out for theaters to reopen, like Tenet or Wonder Woman 1984, so this is how it arrives. And it’ll probably be mediocre-to-solid-if-unremarkable. (Think The Lovebirds, The Old Guard, Extraction as of late, to name a few.)

This is also a weird combination of behind-the-camera talent as well. The script comes from Mattson Tomlin, who worked on the upcoming The Batman. And directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman are best known as the guys behind Catfish and a couple Paranormal Activity movies. Which seems…odd. Then again, what the hell?

The Power Project cast is solid. In addition to Foxx and Gordon-Levitt, there’s Dominique Fishback (The Hate U Give), Courtney B. Vance, Rodrigo Santoro (Westworld), and a bunch of others. It also features veteran stunt performers like Tait Fletcher, who’s been in every badass action movie ever, and Yoshi Sudarso, star of Singapore ass-kicker Buffalo Boys, among others.

Here’s the synopsis:
On the streets of New Orleans, word begins to spread about a mysterious new pill that unlocks superpowers unique to each user. The catch: You don’t know what will happen until you take it. While some develop bulletproof skin, invisibility, and super strength, others exhibit a deadlier reaction. But when the pill escalates crime within the city to dangerous levels, a local cop (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) teams with a teenage dealer (Dominique Fishback) and a former soldier fueled by a secret vendetta (Jamie Foxx) to fight power with power and risk taking the pill in order to track down and stop the group responsible for creating it.
Ready or not, Power Project lands in living rooms via Netflix on August 14.
