In this house we stan Spike Lee. And from what we see in this first trailer for his upcoming Da 5 Bloods, we have quite a bit to be very, very excited about. Come on, that cast alone is worth dying for. Check it out below.
Though theaters mostly remain closed, that doesn’t mean we’re without options for new movies. Da 5 Bloods lands on Netflix next month, and after watching this trailer, it’s going to be a tough wait.
The story centers on four African American Vietnam vets who return to the country years later. They search for the remains of their squad leader who died in combat, but also a box full of gold they buried during the war. So we have a group of men confronting the most traumatic event of their lives, dealing with a legacy of systematic racism, and taking a devastating emotional journey, but at the same time, there are treasure hunt and heist elements. There’s so much to love here. And instead of a maudlin cover of an era-appropriate song, they use an actual era-appropriate song (Chamber Brothers’ “Time Has Come Today”).
At one point, Oliver Stone was set to make this movie focusing on white soldiers, but Lee took over and changed it to African American vets. We’re always going to anticipate a new Spike Lee joint, but especially coming off of BlacKkKlansman in 2018, the filmmaker is working at the top of his considerable game. What we see of Da 5 Bloods looks similar in the regard that he tells a this story but also places it in larger societal context both then and now.
The murderer’s row of Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis, and Isaiah Whitlock Jr. play the four main characters, but Lee also stacked the rest of the cast. We’ve got Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Jonathan Majors (The Last Black Man in San Francisco), Jean Reno (Leon: The Professional), Paul Walter Hauser (I, Tonya), Melanie Thierry (The Zero Theorem), and Veronica Ngo (Furie), among others.
Yeah, we were already excited for Da 5 Bloods, but June 12 can’t get here fast enough. If you need anything, we’ll just be over here refreshing Netflix over and over again until then.
