There’s a proud tradition of stunt performers becoming badass action directors. David Leitch, Chad Stahelski, Nash Egerton, Scott Waugh, and now Sam Hargrave. He cut his teeth coordinating fights for tons of movies, most notably as of late, the likes of Captain America: Winter Soldier, Thor: Ragnarok, and Atomic Blonde, among others. Now he’s getting the chance to helm a feature of his very own, reuniting with key players from his Marvel days. Check out the first trailer for Extraction.
Chris Hemsworth plays a grizzled-yet-hunky mercenary. He’s haunted by the loss of his son and all he cares about is money. But he’s going to have a change of heart and prove to be a good guy after all. Pretty standard stuff, especially as that’s all in this first look.
As expected, the action in this Extraction trailer looks fantastic. It has all the bells and whistles one expects from this subgenre: rocket launchers, machine guns, fist fights, car chases, cliff jumping, rival drug gangs, a white guy killing just so many brown people. Certainly the plot skews toward cliché, but as long as the action delivers, we’ve dealt with much, much worse.
Here’s the synopsis:
Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) is a fearless black market mercenary with nothing left to lose when his skills are solicited to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord. But in the murky underworld of weapons dealers and drug traffickers, an already deadly mission approaches the impossible, forever altering the lives of Rake and the boy.
After directing the biggest box office success ever with Avengers: Endgame, filmmaking duo Joe and Anthony Russo started AGBO, their own production company. Extraction is the second offering from their startup (21 Bridges came first, though they have a bunch of projects in the works). Joe Russo also has a solo writing credit and it’s apparently based on the graphic novel Ciudad the brothers worked on, though the setting has been changed.
Outside of Hemsworth, who we’re curious to see in this sort of down and dirty style of action as opposed to the live-action cartoons that are Marvel movies, there’s a solid supporting cast. Stranger Things’ David Harbour shows up, Derek Luke (The Americans) plays a role, and Golshifteh Farahani (Paterson) dives back into the action pool.
Extraction has been on the way for a while. It’s gone through a handful of name changes, and filming wrapped up some time ago. But Netflix finally releases the film April 24, 2020.
