'Gretel & Hansel' Trailer: Oz Perkins' Latest Horror Looks Dark, Spooky, And Delicious

January has a reputation as being a dumping ground, a place where studios toss movies that didn’t turn out as well as anticipated. We see a lot of films that have been delayed or plagued by interference from overzealous executives or that have been endlessly tinkered with because they just don’t quite work and the studio hopes to recoup at least a little bit of their investment. But it’s also a time where we often find some cool horror and genre movies, and 2020 is no exception. I’m looking forward to Nicolas Pesce’s The Grudge, the Richard Stanley/Nicolas Cage take on Lovecraft’s The Color Out of Space, and Oz Perkins’ Gretel & Hansel, which just dropped another creepy new trailer.

With The Blackcoat’s Daughter and I Am the Pretty Thing Who Lives in the House, Perkins, the son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins, has become one of the more interesting horror filmmakers working right now. With Gretel & Hansel, he looks to put his spin on the familiar Grim fairy tale, and he has plenty to work with.

There are definite shades of folk horror, like recent offerings The Witch and Hagazussa, on display here, and there’s plenty of spooky olde-timey atmosphere in this trailer. It’s ominous and eerie and gorgeously constructed—as dark and dour as it appears, this should still be a beautiful film. And Alice Krige is always unnerving as hell, so that’s going to fun.

Gretel & Hansel lands in theaters on January 31. Are you planning to check it out?
