As 2019 winds to a close, before we look at what’s next, it’s a time for reflection. In movie terms, that means glancing back over the past year and taking stock of the films we saw. I’m fortunate enough to be a member of a couple groups of film critics, and one, the Seattle Film Critics Society, just revealed the results of the 2019 SFCS Awards.
We polled the membership, tallied nominations, voted on those, and here we are.
As usual, I voted for some for some of these and I didn’t vote for others. To be honest, I did vote for a lot of these this time around, like, a startling number actually. This year is an outlier that many of my favorites line up with other people. Though some maybe weren’t my top choices, none of the winners make me cock my head like a confused dog and ask, WTF? There’s usually at least a couple.
I’m particularly happy with the results in our best villain and best action choreography categories. (Admittedly, the action winner wasn’t my number one choice, but it was on my nomination list and it definitely has a broader appeal, and wider footprint overall, than my top choice. What can you do? I’m just stoked we have an action category at all.) The villain, however, is just perfect.
As usual, make of these results what you will. Like what you like, unapologetically and regardless of what other people think. That’s what makes movies so great, we all have the ones we love, the ones we hate, and art is open to individual interpretation.
