Suicide Squad may have been a mess, with a million cuts and major studio interference, but one thing was clear, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was a breakout character. If there’s anything worth watching in that movie, it’s her. And now she’s back, and she’s bringing some friends. Check out the first trailer for Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn. Yes, that’s the full title, but we’ll just call it Birds of Prey because we’re not masochists.
Janky title aside (though it definitely fits for the character), this Birds of Prey trailer is a damn fine time. Directed by Cathy Yan, who’s Dead Pigs was more popular with others than with me, this looks to be a candy-colored slice of outlaw girl-power mayhem, and I’m here for it.
Margot Robbie’s Harley is, once again, gleefully unhinged. She’s broken up with Jared Leto’s Joker (fingers crossed he’s nowhere to be seen) and looking to strike out on her own. With a tight-knit group of like-minded scofflaw maniacs in tow.
The cast is absolutely stacked. Robbie leads it all, but tagging along are Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya. And if that’s not enough, Ewan McGregor plays crime boss Black Mask and Chris Messina shows up as Victor Zsasz. Ali Wong even has an as yet unidentified role, but that’s always good news.
Here’s the synopsis:
Since the events of Suicide Squad, Batman has disappeared, leaving Gotham City unprotected from crime, and Harley Quinn has left the Joker. When Cassandra Cain, a young girl, comes across a diamond belonging to crime lord Black Mask, Harley joins forces with Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to help protect her.
Between this and Joker, DC looks to be doing some interesting, potentially cool things in their movie universe. And we still have James Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel in the works, as well as a Robert Pattinson-starring, Matt Reeves-directed Batman movie and Wonder Woman 1984. Hopefully they’ve stopped trying to ape Marvel’s approach and do their own thing. They certainly have the source material.
