“Bounty hunting is a complicated profession, don’t you agree?”
So says the only dialogue spoken in the first trailer Disney+’s upcoming The
Mandalorian, delivered with laconic, laissez faire style by the one
and only Werner Herzog. And that’s all it needs. And I am all the damn way in.

In the Star Wars universe, the
Mandalorians are a warrior people made up of multiple races. They often become
mercenaries and bounty hunters. Identified by their distinctive armor, the most
famous are Boba and Jango Fett.
The Mandalorian has been compared to a
western, and from their background and what we see in this trailer, that
tracks. And that’s really all the story specifics we know outside of where it
falls on the timeline.
Here’s a bare bones synopsis:
After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. “The Mandalorian” is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.
The Mandalorian also looks dark and weird,
elements only enhanced by the presence of Werner Herzog. And I’m here for a
dark, weird space western.
Pedro Pascal stars in the title role. Joining him in the deep,
shadowy fringes of that far, far away galaxy are Gina Carano, who plays a
former Rebel shock trooper probably turned bounty hunter; and Giancarlo
Esposito, who pops up in this trailer as what looks like an Empire stooge of
some stripe. Rounding out the cast we have Nick Nolte; Emily Swallow; Omid Abtahi;
Taika Waititi; Bill Burr; Ming-Na Wen; and Carl damn Weathers as the leader of
a bounty hunter guild.
Jon Favreau created The Mandalorian, which
drops on Disney+, the Mouse House’s new streaming arm, when the service goes
live on November 12. If I was on the fence about a subscription before, they’re
sure as hell going to get my $12.99 a month now.
