Adam Egypt Mortimer’s Daniel Isn’t Real is one of those movies we’ve been hearing about for what feels like forever, but that we keep missing. (It’s only been a few months in reality, but it feels much longer.) Fortunately, the film is getting a release, and this teaser trailer, while it doesn’t deliver much in the way of content or details, certainly looks nuts in a way I’m super into.

This Daniel Isn’t Real trailer mentions it’s from the producers of Mandy, and it definitely looks like it falls into that mind-bending category. It’s psychedelic and surreal, twisted and dark, and just weird as balls—all as a way to cope with deep trauma and psychological wounds. I also get a distinct Jacob’s Ladder vibe as well in a number of ways.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Troubled college freshman Luke (Miles Robbins) suffers a violent family trauma and resurrects his childhood imaginary friend Daniel (Patrick Schwarzenegger) to help him cope. Charismatic and full of manic energy, Daniel helps Luke to achieve his dreams, before pushing him to the very edge of sanity and into a desperate struggle for control of his mind—and his soul.
Daniel Isn’t Real is based on the 2009 novel In This Way I Was Saved by Brian DeLeeuw, who adapted his own book with Mortimer. (DeLeeuw also wrote Paradise Hills, another strange looking movie we’re stoked to see around these parts, as well as Mortimer’s earlier horror movie, Some Kind of Hate.)
Daniel Isn’t Real also stars Sasha Lane (American Honey, Heart Beats Loud, Hannah Marks (You’re the Worst), and Mary Stuart Masterson (Some Kind of Wonderful, Fried Green Tomatoes), and will be released on December 6. Mark your calendars and get ready to have your brain melt and seep out your ear holes.
