Outside of maybe Red Dawn, Top Gun had more of an impact on my life and who I’ve become as a person than any other movie. And that’s saying something, as movies have and continue to define my life to what is probably an unhealthy degree. That said, I always passed off years’ worth of Top Gun 2 rumors as just talk that would never come to fruition. And once it finally became clear a sequel really was going to happen, I assumed it would be a tossed off joke we’d all make fun of for years. But here we are. I just witnessed the first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, and fuck me, I have a new most-anticipated movie of 2020.
So, Top Gun: Maverick…looks great. I know, I know, I’m as surprised as anyone. And yeah, this is a two-minute trailer, but this is full of nods to the 1986 Tony Scott original, it brings new wrinkles, and though he’s three-plus-decades older and a bit more rumpled, this is still Tom Cruise as smart-ass, play-by-his-own-rules Naval aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. I am here for this.
And because this is a modern Tom Cruise movie, you know that this is all real. The flying is all actual flying, and I’m sure Cruise does his fair share of it—there have been reports all along about him taking lessons and preparing to tackle that element of production.
I don’t have much more to say. This trailer gave me chills. The cast is great and includes Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Ed Harris. Tron: Legacy and Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski takes the helm. While he makes gorgeous movies, they’re usually quite empty, but hopefully he has a good script here, and his visual prowess certainly shines through in this footage.
Top Gun: Maverick takes off June 26, 2020. And perhaps most importantly, there’s a new volleyball scene!
