For first time feature writer/director, Ari Aster knocked one out of the proverbial park last year with Hereditary. It’s not only one of my favorite movies of 2018, it’s also one of the best horror movies in recent memory. So, you’re damn right his next movie is high up on my must-see list. And lucky for everyone, his follow up, Midsommar, opens this summer. Check out the spooky first trailer below.
Midsommar has a definite folk horror feel and aesthetic about it, and there are sure to be comparisons to the likes of The Wicker Man and it’s ilk. There is definitely some off-kilter culty weirdness to behold, and I’m rather into that. Aster has described it as both “Scandinavian folk horror” and “an apocalyptic breakup movie.”
There’s not a ton we know about the story. The logline is “A young woman reluctantly joins her boyfriend on a summer trip where things quickly go awry.” Not particularly specific, but a rich enough setting for creepiness. From this trailer, we follow some young folks who go check out a possibly ancient ritual from some kind of sect or cult or isolated little rural enclave in Sweden. Everything starts out all sunshine and roses, but things are not what they seem, and what begins as initial feelings of disquiet devolves into full blown horror. We see gore, dread, eerie religious rites, and more fun. Again, not blazing new trails, but solid, and in Aster’s hands, it’s easy to imagine things taking dark, unexpected turns.
Midsommar also assembled a fantastic cast, toplined by Florence Pugh (Little Drummer Girl), Will Poulter (Detroit), William Harper Jackson (The Good Place), and Jack Reynor (Free Fire).
Hereditary didn’t land for everyone, but it sure as hell did for me, so Midsommar has me breathing heavy. A24 releases Aster’s latest on August 9, 2019.
