Nicolas Cage is not one to rest on his laurels. Fresh off the maniac glory that is Mandy, he’s back with Between Worlds, where he plays a trucker whose dead wife’s spirit takes over the body of his current girlfriend’s daughter. Yes, you read that right. If you don’t believe me, watch this trailer.
What else is there to say about Between Worlds that’s not contained in that description? That’s more than nuts enough to pique my interest, and this trailer certainly drives home the weirdness, the creep factor, and…the weirdness of it all.
This may be a minor spoiler, though I think you knew this was going to happen, but Between Worlds reportedly contains a scene where Nic Cage has sex with his girlfriend’s (thankfully of-age) daughter—of course, possessed by his dead wife—while reading a book by Nicolas Cage? I don’t know how that works, or if it’s true, but I’m quite curious to find out.
Between screaming “The Hokey Pokey” and smashing a pool table with a sledge hammer in Mom and Dad, every last frame of Mandy, and now this, Cage has had, and continues to have, a banner 2018 for movies that are strange and awesome and straight-up off the wall. He’s really upping his game, and considering the tire-fire of reality that exists outside of his films, it’s a welcome escape.
Between Worlds played at Fantastic Fest last month and will now officially see the light of day for the rest of us on December 21, just in time to have one hell of a Christmas. Christmas with Cage! If I had to hazard a guess, I imagine Saban Films plans to give this a (very) limited theatrical run while unfurling it on various VOD platforms at the same time.
Also, there’s this poster, which…just…hell yes. I mean, revenge, hell, fire, those shades? I’m in.
