So, if you need an infusion of gonzo action this Monday afternoon,
we’re more than happy to oblige. Check out the badass new teaser trailer for
Erik Matti’s Buybust, which checks off all of the items on
our action wish list.
I’ve had my eye on Buybust since I first
stumbled across it earlier this year, and Screen Anarchy as this latest
glimpse. It’s short, but continues to look promising as all hell. It also stars
MMA fighter Brandon Vera. While fighters transitioning to film is a dicey
proposition with an up and down history to say the least, they’ve also turned
out some great gritty DTV style fare. Hopefully that’s what we’re seeing here,
the birth of a new, low-budget action icon. Or at least a dude who can stage an
action fight well.
Here’s the synopsis:
After surviving the slaughter of her entire squad in a drug raid compromised by dirty cops, anti-narcotics special operative Nina Manigan (Anne Curtis), is eager to go head-to-head with the drug cartels that hold a bloody grip on Manila. But when her new mission in the city’s most dangerous slum goes south, the angry civilians turn on her squad. Trapped between a brutal drug gang and hordes of bloodthirsty citizens, their only option is to fight their way out, turning one claustrophobic street at a time into a symphony of apocalyptic violence.
So we’ve got dirty cops, corruption, economic strife, and
unrest among the citizens—all very prescient, given the political landscape in
the Philippines right now under current president Rodrigo Duterte. (Trump’s a
fan of his draconian policies, especially executing drug dealers.) All of that
should make for a grim, tense palate for an action movie. Also, I’m very into
the phrase “symphony of apocalyptic violence.” That has my immediate attention.
Buybust hits a few fests in July and Well Go USA is set to release it on August 10.
