This year, the main reason I was bummed to miss Sundance was
I missed the bonkers-sounding, Nic Cage-starring madness that is
Mandy. It’s one of those movies that, after it premiered, it
kept sounding crazier and crazier, and more and more perfect every time. Now
there’s good news, as it’s been picked up for distribution and we’ll be able to
mainline it into our eyeballs this summer.
Deadline reports that RLJ Entertainment has official
purchased the U.S. rights to Mandy. They also have an eye on
a theatrical release—most likely a very limited run with a day-and-date VOD
release—sometime this summer. That’s as specific as we can get, but holy hell,
that’s good enough for me on this dreary March morning.
When I first heard about Panos Cosmatos follow up to
Beyond the Black Rainbow, it sounded super rad. I mean, it
had Nicolas Cage running around the woods in the 1980s hunting a bunch of
vengeful cultists. That’s a near-perfect storm of hell yes. There are very good
reasons why I placed it on my most-anticipated movies of 2018 list.
But as people saw it as Sundance, even more details came
out, and each new addition only made me froth at the mouth. It co-stars the
massively underrated Andrea Riseborough and damn legend Bill Duke. The cult is
a bunch of devil worshippers. There’s metal. And hallucinations. And, oh yeah,
fucking demon bikers! (I’m not much for exclamation points, so the fact that I
used one right there should indicate how exciting that is.)
Mandy is supposed to be gory and trippy
and all kinds of crazy. I don’t know how I can contain myself until this summer
because I want this mayhem parked in front of my face right this damn minute.
The Deadline report calls it “a phantasmagoric journey
filled with bloody vengeance and laced with fire.” I can’t think of a single
thing even remotely wrong with that.
So, circle this summer on your calendar and make sure you’re
free to drop whatever you’re doing at a moment’s notice and watch
Mandy the very first second it’s available.
