It’s award season, mother fuckers! I’m fortunate enough to
be part of the inaugural class of the Seattle Film Critics Society (they shot
down my name suggestion: Seattle Movie Nerd Party Club). We’ve voted on and handed
out awards a few times under this moniker, but before now it’s been a loose
collection of like-minded film weirdos, not an actual group with like officers,
by-laws, and things like that. I wrote about the nominees the other day, but now
the final votes have been tallied and the winners are here. Drumroll please…
Again, I’m a bit behind the pack when it comes to this. (The
winners were announced Monday.) But better late than never, right? As usual, I
voted for some of these, not for others. Some I have issues with (seriously,
Daniel Day Lewis gives only the third best performer in Phantom
Thread), but I’m still all in for some I didn’t vote for (I voted for
City of Ghosts for best doc, but I absolutely adored
Faces Places, so I harbor no ill will).
Some of these choices are rather expected, others are a bit
off the wall. More than anything, it reflects the strange and varied collection
of movie folks we harbor here in the upper left hand corner of the country. It’s
part of why I like it here so much.
