Cinematic adaptations of beloved literary works are a dicey
proposition at best. No matter how good a job filmmakers do, there will forever
be those who decry it as an abomination. I’m normally whatever about these—a good
movie is a good movie, even if it’s based on a book I love and even if it’s
nothing like said book. I’m not hugely invested in Madeleine L’Engle’s
A Wrinkle in Time either way. I read it once as a youngster,
I remember one of my sister’s elementary school classes turning it into a play,
but that’s about it. That said, the trailer for Ava Duverney’s adaptation looks
bonkers and epic and all kinds of rad. Take a look for yourself.
Since I don’t listen to music anymore (I’m continually
reaffirmed that my belief all current popular music is an elaborate joke is
right on the money), I didn’t see this trailer premiere during the American Music
Awards. But thanks to the magic of the internet, it was online immediately.
From what we see in this trailer, a young girl whose scientist
father disappears must travel through space and time and all kinds of wondrous
realms to find him. She’s got a skeptical buddy in tow and along the way gets
to hang out with Oprah, Mindy Kaling, and Reese Witherspoon. Sounds like a
blast.
It’s also cool to know that people besides white small town
boys with floppy brown hair can have magical adventures, too. According to
every movie I’ve ever seen, they’re the only ones who ever get to go on such
journeys, so it’s nice to mix things up a bit.
I’m pretty damn into this crazy, bright, candy-colored
sweeping adventure. It promises to be grand and heroic, touching and sweet, and
give us a great deal to gawk at.
In addition to Oprah, Kaling, and Witherspoon, A
Wrinkle in Time stars Storm Reid, Levi Miller, Chris Pine, Gugu
Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Pena, Andre Holland, and a host of
others. It hits theaters March 9, 2018.
