Hey horror fans, if you didn’t start paying attention to
Turkish director Can Evrenol after his debut, Baskin, you
may want to change that. If not, the trailer for his follow up, Housewife,
should certainly pique your interest. I’ll wait.
I called Baskin “a tense, brutal,
expectation defying supernatural nightmare,” and I stand by that. And from what
we see in this Housewife trailer from Bloody Disgusting,
there’s more gruesome, mind-warping horror in store for brave viewers.
Here’s the synopsis:
Holly’s childhood was a nightmare—at age 7, she watched her mother kill her sister and father. Twenty years later, Holly’s dreams remain plagued by that painful memory. An unexpected reunion with an old friend further complicates matters, introducing Holly to a strange cult-like group that follows a celebrity psychic, one who takes a special liking to Holly. And because of him, her worst nightmares become shockingly real.
Murder, torment, lingering psychological damage, cults; what’s
not to love about this? And oh man, creepy things reaching out of toilets in
movies absolutely wrecks me. Can’t wait.
There’s a lot to dig about this trailer. Sure, there’s no
dialogue, but we do get ample blood and sex and violence—though the trailer’s
not super grotesque, and I haven’t seen it so I can’t speak to specifics,
Housewife has been described as full of shocking, stomach-wrenching
gore, which won’t surprise anyone who saw Baskin. We’ve also
got shades of body horror, more than a few nods to the Italian genre masters
(just look at the color palate, among other elements), a splash of J-horror,
and even hints of Hammer.
Housewife makes its North American debut at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival in October, in, you guessed it, Brooklyn. If we’re fortunate, and if it hasn’t happened already, someone will snap up the rights for this. I would like to mainline Housewife into my eyeballs at the soonest possible opportunity.
And what the hell are they drinking in Turkey? Between
Baskin, the Siccin movies, and now this,
they’re throwing some crazy ass horror our way.
