We live in a world where even trailers for movies get their
own trailers. That’s just a weird fact of life that, rather than being a sign
of the end of days as some choose to see it, I just think it’s an odd. And some
of them are actually awesome, like this quick tease for Darren Aronofsky’s
mother!.
This mother! trailer trailer doesn’t reveal
much, shocking, I know, but it does look all kinds of crazy. And if Darren
Aronofsky, Jennifer Lawrence, and Javier Bardem teaming up for a horror movie
doesn’t get you at least a little excited, it’s time to look back at your life
choices and own the mistakes you’ve made. Especially after the last time the
director dabbled around in this end of the genre pool with Black Swan.
Mostly, what we see here serves to up the creep factor, but
the last few seconds are where it gets totally nuts. There’s fire, bugs, and
what appears to be an exploding blood light bulb. I don’t know what’s going on,
but I sure do like it. The plot reportedly revolves around a couple who have
their relationship tested when uninvited guests show up on the scene. That’s
all we know, but it’s SOP for Aronofsky, who likes to play it close to the vest.
But it’s enough. After all, this is a guy who turned a ballerina spat into a
twisted psychological thriller.
mother! also stars Ed Harris, Michelle
Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson, Kristen Wiig, and Stephen McHattie, among others.
Aronofsky also once again works with frequent director of photography Matthew
Libatique, but this happens to be his first film not scored by Clint Mansell. Instead
Johann Johannsson (Arrival, Sicario) will
handle those duties, and while that’s a change, his style certainly seems to
fit the material.
The full mother! trailer drops on August
8. As for the actual movie, it premieres at the Venice Film Festival, shows at
the Toronto International Film Festival, and then hits theaters on September
15.
