'Atomic Blonde' Trailer: Charlize Theron Fights Berlin, And Everyone Else

It appears today is “second trailer for movies that premiered at SXSW day.” Or something. Earlier, we saw the second trailer for Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, and now we’ve got a new look at Atomic Blonde. Don’t worry, there’s still quite a bit of Charlize Theron kicking people in the face. Enjoy.

I’m curious to lay eyes on Atomic Blonde, formerly titled The Coldest City, for myself. A lot of people raved about it after SXSW, but just as many weren’t as high. My question is: is that because maybe it’s actually not that great (reviews from film festivals are hard because that’s such weird experience—you fall in love, you fall in hate, you see so much it’s overwhelming and colors everything else), or because people expected it to be Joan Wick, and it’s something else?

John Wick co-director David Leitch helms this adaptation of Anthony Jonson’s graphic novel. And while there’s action, which the first trailer definitely highlights, the story is, according to those familiar with the work, more spy thriller than straight up actioner. Basically, I’m curious if the response, either positive or negative, says more about the movie or the expectations.

Either way, a slick, stylish, sexy spy thriller with comic book tendencies sounds lovely to me. I can also see this being a style-over-substance scenario, but I don’t actually care, because I really want to see Atomic Blonde.

Oscar winner Charlize Theron explodes into summer in ATOMIC BLONDE, a breakneck action-thriller that follows MI6’s most lethal assassin through a ticking time bomb of a city simmering with revolution and double-crossing hives of traitors.  

The crown jewel of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies.

Atomic Blonde opens July 28.
