Spider-Man Shouldn't Mess With Michael Keaton In New 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Trailer

I know it’s hard to get excited for a third Spider-Man franchise in the last decade and a half, especially given that the previous endeavor was so lackluster. (Okay, it’s not that hard.) And if the fact that the Wall Crawler is back in Marvel’s hands where he belongs, or his appearance in Captain America: Civil War didn’t do it for you, this new Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer should do the trick.

This Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer is packed with fantastic stuff, from the tone to the potential for disaster to Michael Keaton being deliciously evil as the Vulture (he was described earlier this week as a kind of “dark Tony Stark,” which is promising indeed). There’s just too much stuff to get into without a deep dive, so you’ll just have to watch it a time or three and unpack all the fun for yourselves.

For my money, though, the best part is that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, for all his abilities, is just a kid trying not fuck up. He wants to do the right thing, but every time he does, it backfires terribly. More than the other two Spideys, Holland’s truly feels like the awkward high school age Peter Parker, the wise ass nerd who’s both cocky and cripplingly insecure.

And it’s good that I like this version, because now that Marvel has the rights to use Spider-Man, he’s going to be in every movie possible. He’s already filming for Avengers: Infinity War, but I’m most looking forward to his solo joints. I’ve always liked the character best when he’s on his own, not part of a team. Then again, that’s my preference for most superheroes—when it comes to team ups, they too often get the shaft.

Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, Zendaya, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, and Jacob Batalon, and opens on July 7.
