Two things I love: watching people get kicked in the face
and Idris Elba. Put them together and what do you have? The new Discovery
series Idris Elba: Fighter. Check out the first trailer and
try to contain yourself. This is going to rule.
So, Idris Elba is not just a dude who plays tough guys in
movies an on TV. As it turns out, Stringer Bell is pretty badass in real life,
too, as is evident in this trailer for Idris Elba: Fighter.
The premise is simple, over the course of the three-episode series, the 44-year-old British actor travels around, trains to become a pro kickboxer, digs into the history of Muay Thai, and ultimately steps in the ring with another fighter where they beat the hell out of each other for a few rounds. Sounds perfect.
Idris Elba: Fighter doesn’t come totally
out of the blue. The Luther star is a longtime kickboxer. Or
at least he’s trained for more than a decade. He’s often stated that it’s his
primary way to stay in shape for his acting roles—and if you’ve seen him, it’s
definitely working. Additionally, he’s also talked a number of times of being “fight
ready” at a moment’s notice and his desire to get in a ring and throw down.
Talking about Idris Elba: Fighter when it
was first announced, the star of the upcoming Dark Tower
saga said:
“It has been a lifelong ambition of mine to fight
professionally. Entering the ring to further test myself as a human being is a
challenge I have been looking to take on for quite some time.”
This isn’t the first time Elba has indulged one of his passions
via reality TV, either. A renowned gearhead, we’ve already seen him tackles
cars and racing a couple of times in Idris Elba: King of
Speed and Idris Elba: No Limits. As he’s also a
musician and DJ, I’ve already postulated we’ll ultimately see Idris
Elba: Lets’ Go Clubbing.
This may spoil things, but back in October, Idris Elba won his first kickboxing match. Take a look below as filmed by none other than
Madonna.
Idris Elba: Fighter debuts on Discovery
U.K. on January 17. I don’t know when it airs in the U.S., but you can bet I’ll
be keeping an eye out. And I would like to take the opportunity to thank
Discovery Channel for knowing how much the world wants to watch Idris Elba
elbow dudes in the skull.
