Tormented priests, creepy-ass children, the Devil playing
mind games—I am so all-in on this trailer for Philippine horror Seclusion
(Seklusyon). Check it out for yourself after the jump.
This Seclusion trailer is all mood, atmosphere,
and tension and I so, so dig every second of it. We’ve got spooky nuns,
possessed kids, disembodied voices, and more, all wrapped in period crime
thriller trappings. That’s a potentially powerful cinematic cocktail of horror
and noir indeed.
Director Erik Matti is probably best known for his action
films like On the Job, but he’s no stranger to crime
thrillers (Honor Thy Father) and horror (he contributed to
ABCs of Death 2, among others). In Seclusion,
it looks like he found way to synthesize those two elements.
Set in the late 1940s, Seclusion tracks a
ritual where deacons go into seclusion in a remote fortress for seven days before
becoming full priests. The purpose is to stave off last-minute attempts by the
Devil to get all up in their business, lure them away from the cloth, and generally
ruin things for everyone. The Devil is kind of a dick like that. This movie
follows the last time this happened, so you know if they abandoned the practice
after the fact, something went horribly wrong.
There’s obviously much more going on, what with the little
girl who maybe was sent by god, but maybe she’s a tool of evil, and another
priest investigating the matter—that appears to be where the detective threads
comes in. We’ll have to wait and see, but that appears to be the gist of it.
However it shakes out, I’m still totally in and can’t wait to check this out.
Seclusion screens on Christmas Day as
part of this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival. What better way to celebrate
the birth of Baby Jesus than with a demonic horror movie? I can’t think of
anything I’d rather do.
