First 'Guardians Of The Galaxy 2' Trailer Needs A Hug

Over the last couple of days, we’ve heard rumblings that our first look at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 might arrive with Marvel’s latest joint, Doctor Strange. But lo and behold, we don’t even have to wait that long, because a shiny new teaser just hit the airwaves. Check it out below.

In a cinematic universe often accused of being overly same-y, Guardians of the Galaxy stands out as something different. Sure, it fits into the larger MCU quite nicely, but director/writer/mastermind James Gunn’s fingerprints are all over this, and his smart-ass humor and individual style shines through in a way that hasn’t happened in most of the other entries. Perhaps the greatest trick Marvel pulled off was making a movie about deep space assassins and outlaws, where the two biggest stars only appear as the voices of a talking raccoon and an alien tree who only says three words, into a massive global hit. I guess the fact that it’s really damn fun probably has something to do with that.

This teaser trailer doesn’t reveal much about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but if you’re a fan of the look, feel, and vibe of the first film, it certainly seems like we’re going to get more of that sarcastic wit and swashbuckling high-adventure.

What little we know about the plot revolves around the team delving into the mystery of the true identity of Peter Quill’s father. All we know on that front is that it’s not J’son of Spartax, his father in the comics—James Gunn put the kibosh on that a while back.

All of the key players are present and accounted for, and we check in with Star-Lord/Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Baby Groot (VinDiesel), Nebula (Karen Gillan), and Yondu (Michael Rooker). What we don’t see, however, are any of the new additions. This includes Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell), Taserface (Chris Sullivan), Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), Tullk (Tommy Flanagan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), or Sylvester Stallone in his mystery role.

Because Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a Marvel movie, rest assured that by the time we actually lay eyes on the movie, we’ll have plenty of trailers, clips, TV spots, merchandise, and much more to examine in depth for glimpses of newcomers and clues to the story.

While we’ll have plenty to occupy ourselves in the meantime, we still have a long wait ahead of us as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 doesn’t open until May 5, 2017.
