As much as I dig post-apocalyptic movies, I’m self-aware
enough to know my particular skillset is all but useless after civilization
crumbles and the world goes to shit. I’m fucked six ways to Sunday, that’s all
there is to it. But so are Gabriel Diani and Etta Devine, a comedy duo and the
leads of Diani & Devine Meet the Apocalypse. The
crowdfunded end-of-the-world comedy dropped a new trailer, and from the look of
things, these kids are having a rough go of it. Good to know I won’t be alone.
The duo put their stamp on horror-comedy with The Selling a few years ago, and now they’re back to give the downfall of
society a spin. While I have no applicable skills for the end of the world, it
turns out neither do the members of the titular comedy team—who knew writing
jokes wasn’t going to be a useful survival tool? They do have a cute dog (his
name is Watson), which, as we all know, is essential to life roaming the
post-apocalyptic wastes.
Described as Hope and Crosby Road to…
movies meets Cormac McCarthy’s grim, father-son survival tale The
Road, this is an interesting premise to be sure, with a meta twist
thrown in for kicks.
When power and communications mysteriously shut off, the
Diani and Devine, and Watson, hit the road looking for a safe place to watch
the end of the world. Along the way they have to contend with everything that
comes along with that, from man-hunting cannibals to the mundane drudgery of
daily life.
Diani & Devine Meet the Apocalypse
features a ton of recognizable faces, including, but not limited to Barry
Bostwick, Dawn Didawick, Harry Groener, Jonathan Silverman Arye Gross, Kirsten
Vangsness Ramon de Ocampo, Armin Shimerman, Cole Stratton, Kitty Swink, Amir
Talai, Jocelyn Towne, Janet Varney, America Young, and more. It has that going
for it, which is nice.
Set to make its world premiere at the Austin Film Festival
in October, Diani & Devine Meet the Apocalypse is
available for pre-order at DDTMA.com. It looks like a damn fine post-apocalyptic time.
The trailer looks wonderful! I loved "The Selling". Looking forward to "meeting" the Apocalypse now!
