I’m a sucker for musicals, and I love, love, love the fact
that, after the massive critical success of Whiplash, when
he could have done damn near anything he wanted, Damien Chazelle made a goddamn
musical. And a musical starring the tag team of charm Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling to boot. La La Land hits theaters in December, and
though it’s a few months off in the distance, it just delivered a dreamy new
trailer.
A struggling jazz pianist and an aspiring actress fall in
love and sing a bunch of songs? I’m down. So, so down. Both musicals and this
style of throwback romance don’t get much love in modern times, but I couldn’t
be more stoked.
A magical quality infuses this footage, and it’s easy to
believe in this world where people burst into spontaneous song and dance
numbers. It’s a crazy idea in 2016, but as Stone sings, “Here’s to the ones
that dream, foolish as they may seem.”
This trailer has a more maudlin tone than the first, but
there’s a wistful, hopeful tinge to the surface melancholy that’s spot on for a
moving ballad. (There’s a bit of a “Rainbow Connection” vibe going on.) You get
the sense that the chips are down but she’s going to power through.
La La Land makes its premiered at the Venice
Film Festival next month. For the rest of us, however, the film opens on
December 2. In addition to Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, it also stars John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, Callie Hernandez, Finn
Wittrock, Sonoya Mizuno, Jessica Rothe, Josh Pence, and Tom Everett Scott.
