Park Chan-Wook's 'The Handmaiden' Trailer: Trippy, Discordant, And Gorgeous

Park Chan-wook is one of those directors that, no matter what he does, everything else takes an immediate backseat. After his English-language debut, Stoker (number on on my 2013 top ten list), the South Korean hit machine is back working in his native land with The Handmaiden, which just dropped a sensory-shaking new trailer and eerie new poster.

'Jason Bourne' (2016) Movie Review

Back in 2007, on the press trail stumping for The Bourne Ultimatum, the third in the then-trilogy of espionage actioners, Matt Damon appeared on The Daily Show. In the course of the conversation, the actor said he and director Paul Greengrass, who also helmed The Bourne Supremacy, joked that the next movie would be called The Bourne Redundancy. It’s been nine years, with an attempted franchise reboot sandwiched in the middle (2012’s lackluster The Bourne Legacy), but with the simply titled Jason Bourne, Damon and Greengrass finally delivered on that promise, in spirit if not in name.

Over the weekend I was out of town, not at San Diego Comic-Con (thanks, New Jersey, for the 10+ hours in the Newark airport). But the overcrowded festival of all things geeky raged on in my absence (to be fair, I have zero interest in ever attending—it’s all my least favorite things, crowds, lines, and heat). Studios did, however, drop a shit ton of cool news about big upcoming features, including an array of trailers. I’ve been up for more than 36 hours, I’ve got a body full of caffeine, so what the hell, lets recap the best of the bunch.

'Lights Out' (2016) Movie Review

2016 has been a strong year for horror. The Witch, Under the Shadow, Green Room, and other notables are destined to wind up on a slew of end-of-the-year best-of lists. And these are just a few of the bigger, hyped-up movies that have hit.; we haven’t even started digging into less buzzed-about titles. And there are still more on the way—Don’t Breathe and The Woods are two I’m particularly jazzed on.

'Neither Heaven Nor Earth' (2015) Movie Review

Though they can be some of the most powerful cinematic vehicles out there, war movies also often have a tendency to feel a bit same-y. “War is hell” is a common refrain, and while there are still remarkable highs to be found, ubiquitous entries in the genre often start to feel like their own special brand of damnation. Which is why Clement Cogitore’s Neither Heaven Nor Earth (formerly The Wakhan Front), an unnerving, unsettling, unique look at French soldiers at war in Afghanistan, is such a welcome burst of brooding, supernatural freshness.

'xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage' Trailer Skis In The Jungle And Rides A Motorcycle On Water

Considering how much I have come to adore Vin Diesel for his over-the-top action spectacles, the fact that seems like a genuine, earnest dude, and his deep commitment to being a complete and utter nerd, his 2002 actioner xXx is not one I’ve ever been able to get behind. It’s not one of his finest moments. But apparently there was enough interest to make xXx: The Return of Xander Cage happen. (More accurately, Diesel had enough interest—the man has an endearing force of will to make whatever the hell he wants happen.) The unnecessary film just dropped its first trailer. The result is bugnuts fucking crazy and I’m now 100% enamored.

'Ovarian Psycos' (2016) Movie Review

In the mood for a documentary about a radical feminist bike collective made up entirely of women of color? You should be. Directed by Janna Sokolowski and Kate Brumbull-LaValle, Ovarian Psycos looks at the Ovarian Psycos Bicycle Brigade, a group of Latina women in East Los Angles who use their monthly bike rides as a launching platform for activism, empowerment, and connection.

'Kickboxer: Vengeance' Trailer: Jean-Claude Van Damme Schools A New Generation In Revenge

'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' Just Dropped A Ton Of Incredible Footage

We live in a magical time where we’re going to get a new Star Wars movie roughly every year for the foreseeable future. That’s enough to make my childhood self retroactively explode with glee. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first of the series of films to exist outside of the main narrative line of that far, far away galaxy, is up next, and Lucasfilm just dropped this awesome new behind the scenes look. Attach Kim Jee-woon’s name to any film and I’m there. A Bittersweet Life is one of my three favorite movies of all time, I Saw the Devil is a revenge masterpiece, and The Good, the Bad, the Weird is a straight up berserk. Hell, I even dig his English-language debut, the Arnold Schwarzenegger-fronted actioner, The Last Stand, though it is admittedly the weakest link in his otherwise sterling canon. The director is back working in South Korea for the first time since 2010, and just dropped the first trailer for his period drama The Age of Shadows (formerly titled Secret Agent). Ghostbusters 2016 is a curious phenomenon. The controversy and hateful misogyny swirling around the reboot has overshadowed the movie itself, but it’s finally here for us to watch and judge for ourselves.

Watch The Unsettling First Trailer For Indonesian Horror 'Danur'

Though it’s woefully underappreciated Stateside, Indonesia has carved out a solid spot when it comes to international horror. (There is a long history with Indonesia and horror, one of my favorites is still 1981’s Mystics in Bali.) Writer/director Awi Suryadi won some new devotees in 2015 with the eerie-ass clown horror Badoet, and he’s back for another tear around the genre with Danur. We haven’t even had the opportunity to lay eyes upon Kickboxer: Vengeance (fingers crossed for sometime this year, which seems reasonable considering it’s about to debut at the Fantasia Film Festival), but we’ve got even more of the rebooted Kickboxer franchise on the way.
