The original Mechanic—the 1972, Michael
Winner-directed, Charles Bronson and Jan-Michael Vincent-starring original, not
the 2011 remake—is one of my all-time favorites. While the Jason
Statham-fronted update doesn’t live up to that, it’s a fun enough DTV-style
actioner, the kind that only comes to theaters when Statham takes the lead. It
was apparently successful enough to warrant a sequel, and Mechanic:
Resurrection just dropped a first trailer.
This Mechanic: Resurrection trailer looks
completely silly, but in a way that I am totally down with. God bless Jason Statham for continuing to champion this style of action. He will always have a
place in my heart.
And there is some ridiculous shit to behold. There’s a great
deal of talk of “elimination,” which, of course, makes me think of bodily
fluids; that scene with the glass-bottomed swimming pool on the top floor of a
skyscraper is absurd in the best possible way; and that prosthetic hand hiding
a knife may be a stroke of genius. Or the result of a stroke, I can’t tell
which. We even get fantastic cheesy lines like, “I’ve spent my whole life
setting people up to die, I’m going to set you up to live.” I may have cheered.
Can we talk about what’s going on with Tommy Lee Jones for a
moment? This is not the stoic, grizzled, Oscar-winning TLJ we’ve become
accustomed to in modern times. No, this is wing-nut, Under
Siege, knife-fighting-with-Steven-Seagal TLJ, and I am greatly
amused. Seriously, that soul patch is phenomenal.
Directed by German filmmaker Dennis Gansel,
Mechanic: Resurrection proves definitively, once and for
all, that Jessica Alba is still alive. Good for her.
Here’s a synopsis if things like plot are important to you:
Arthur Bishop [Jason Statham] returns as the Mechanic in the sequel to the 2011 action thriller. When the deceitful actions of a cunning but beautiful woman [Jessica Alba] force him to return to the life he left behind, Bishop’s life is once again in danger as he has to complete an impossible list of assassinations of the most dangerous men in the world.
Whether or not anyone besides me cares about Mechanic:
Resurrection remains to be seen, but it hits theaters August 26.
