Documentary collage as autobiography is an intriguing
narrative premise. In Cameraperson, Kirsten Johnson uses
footage from the acclaimed films she’s photographed over the years (including
Citizenfour, The Invisible War,
The Oath, and many more) to construct a cinematic memoir.
Juxtaposing seemingly unrelated images, an arc emerges, and
Cameraperson paints a picture of the person
bouncing around the world, from New York to Nigeria to Bosnia and beyond, seizing
it all on film. Gorgeous and captivating; full of themes of war, motherhood,
and oppression; this is a compelling, moving look at the creative process and
the people behind the camera. [Grade: A]
