Before he dives deep into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with
Thor: Ragnarok, director Taika Waititi is back at SIFF with
the off-kilter, hilarious, and heartwarming Hunt for the
Wilderpeople.
Showing off his visual chops like never before—he shoots the
New Zealand landscape with affection and the sweeping landscapes add an
impressive scope and scale—Waititi tells the story of a troubled foster kid
(Julian Dennison), on his last chance, and his grizzled foster uncle (Sam
Neill), who kick off a massive manhunt when they, each with nowhere else to go,
head in to the bush.
The two leads have a fantastic chemistry, both comedic and
emotional, and Wilderpeople deftly mixes action, comedy, and
drama. We’re watching the initial
upswing of a very special filmmaker. [Grade: B+/A-]
