Being trapped, alone, just a short distance from unattainable
freedom, threatened by some external force you can’t control or defeat, is a
primal, visceral fear. And The Shallows, an upcoming
thriller about Blake Lively trapped a few hundred feet from shore by a great
white shark, looks to make full use of that lurking fear. The film just dropped
a new trailer. Check it out below.
Raging sharks have a spotty history on the big screen,
especially in recent years. For every Jaws, which scared and
entire generation so shitless they stopped swimming, we get multiple Sharknado
movies. From what we’ve seen of The Shallows, it at least
has the potential to be terrifying as hell, more in line with the likes of
Open Water than Deep Blue Sea. (Don’t get
me wrong, I adore Deep Blue Sea, but while awesome, it doesn’t
quite measure up when it comes to sheer dread and tension.)
This trailer, as opposed to the last, gives us a better
sense of the action that’s in store—there’s even a nod to
Jaws with that flare gun bit. The story is simple. Nancy
(Blake Lively) goes surfing alone on a secluded stretch of beach only to find
it’s the feeding grounds of a Great White Shark, and gets stranded just a few
hundred yards from shore and safety. It will take all of her grit and resourcefulness
to survive.
Yeah, that’s not the most original or complex plot, but it’s one full of possibilities and with more than enough opportunities to crank up the pressure and put Lively in harrowing situations. It’s a straight up contained man-versus-nature survival story, and directed by Run All Night helmer Jaume Collet-Sera, that sounds good to me.
The Shallows hits theaters on June 29.
