Does the world need another
Bourne movie? Probably not. But that doesn’t mean we’re not
getting one, and that doesn’t mean I’m not going to watch the shit out of
Jason Bourne when it drops this summer. That was going to
happen anyway, but with the first trailer hitting the airwaves, and looking
like what you hope to see from a movie about a badass amnesiac spy, I just
might get excited for this one.
Matt Damon returns to the title role, which is good for the
franchise. As much as I like Jeremy Renner, The Bourne Legacy
was not particularly grand. With references to Edward Snowden, Greece, and more
current events, Jason Bourne looks to have something it wants
to say about the present state of the world. But it also has gritty fight
scenes, verite-style camera work, explosions, high-speed chases, tense
cat-and-mouse scenes, and all the things fans dig about these movies.
We’ve heard the plot finds Bourne having been off the grid
more or less since his last outing, hiding out—I suspect he’s hiding out in
some Eastern European backwater, fist-fighting for money—reminiscing on what he’s
done, all the windows he’s jumped through, all the asses he’s kicked. But he
gets lured back when Julia Stiles’ CIA analyst Nicky Parsons, who looks to have
a bigger part this time out, sets out to blow the whistle on the government. I
can roll with that, and when you throw in a fantastic crew of supporting
players including Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones, Riz Ahmed, and Vincent
Cassel, what’s not to love?
Directed by Paul Greengrass, who helmed both The
Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum,
Jason Bourne hits theaters July 29. Check out the trailer
