This 'Mark Of The Witch' Trailer Is Sinister And Unsettling

It may not be quite as evil a date as it could be, but June 6, 2016, a.k.a. 6/6/16, is about as evil as we’re going to get this year. Which makes it an appropriate release date for Jason Bognacki’s upcoming horror joint, Mark of the Witch. Formerly titled Another, it’s been coming for a while, but now has a U.S. release date, the new title, and a spooky new trailer.

I saw the film’s world premiere at the Seattle InternationalFilm Festival back in 2014. (Read my review HERE, when it was still called Another.) A modern reworking of the giallo framework, Mark of the Witch is a dark and moody, with a tense, weighty atmosphere. Obvious comparison points are Dario Argento, Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci, and their ilk, but there’s also a heaping dose of pulp and Hammer-style horror thrown in for good measure. The visual texture and strategic color palate gives the film a lush texture, and every frame feels like a painting.

Here’s the ominous synopsis:

On her 18th birthday, she will belong to the devil. Compelled by the idea she has an evil twin, a beautiful young woman is driven into a dark underworld of demonic possession, desire, and extreme indulgences when she learns she may be the devil’s daughter.

There are witches, covens, and plenty of creep to keep you entertained and clutching your armrest. Mark of the Witch works best in the quiet moments, when it piles tension on top of tension, and though it comes off the rails a bit the longer it goes, it’s definitely a unique endeavor, and well worth a watch for the hardcore horror hounds out there.

Starring Paulie Redding, who looks like Audrey Hepburn decided to make a horror movie, Mark of the Witch also stars genre fave Maria Olsen (Lords of Salem). After a successful run on the festival circuit, it finally hits VOD and digital platforms on 6/6/16. Check out the trailer below, and a new poster below that.
