Marvel takes a lot of flack for their movies being a bit
same-y, which isn’t an entirely unfounded complaint. They’ve taken steps to mix
things up lately, most notably with Guardians of the Galaxy,
but later this year they’re going to take things in an entirely different
direction with Doctor Strange. And if you need proof that
this is like nothing we’ve witnessed thus far in the MCU, check out the new
trailer that just hit the airwaves.
There’s a serious world-bending, Matrix
and Inception kind of vibe in this Doctor
Strange trailer, and it looks totally awesome and appropriately
psychedelic for the first big-screen jaunt from the MCU’s Sorcerer Supreme.
Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a gifted
neurosurgeon who loses everything when his hands are crushed in an accident.
Searching for meaning and a way to help people after his injuries, he encounters
the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), who shows him the way of the mystic arts and
opens up a new universe of possibilities. It’s going to be interesting to see
how Doctor Strange fits into the already extant MCU—he’s
something quite different than the usual tights-and-capes superheroes—but it’s
definitely an exciting prospect.
Directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister),
Doctor Strange also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams,
Michael Stuhlbarg, Mads Mikkelsen, and Scott Adkins. It hits theaters later
this year on November 4.
