Isn’t this always the case? We go for what feels like
forever not seeing much from a movie that we’re super pumped for, and when we
get the first splash it turns into a wave. I sincerely hope that’s what’s
happening with Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon. Just yesterday
we got the very first trailer, and today we woke up to a quick new U.K. teaser.
Heads up, if you’re on the clock, maybe check to make sure your boss isn’t
looking over your shoulder, this one’s a wee bit NSFW.
Clocking in at just 30 seconds, this latest look at
The Neon Demon plays like a distilled version of what we’ve
already seen. There’s even more of the striking imagery, the languid color
scheme, and Cliff Martinez’s throbbing synth score. This still feels like the
direct descendant of Suspiria, which is perfectly fine in my
book.
There are also glimpses of new bits. We get our first look
at both Jena Malone and Keanu Reeves, who were noticeably absent last time, not
to mention that mountain lion. I don’t know how that little dude figures in,
but I can’t wait to find out.
Again, there’s not much plot to be found here, but as
Nicolas Winding Refn’s films frequently field accusations of style over
substance (maybe true in some cases, but oh, what a style), that’s not a huge
shocker. The basics are still in play, however. A young model (Elle Fanning)
heads to Los Angeles and falls in with a sinister, youth-obsessed cadre of
women who want her beauty. From those humble beginnings, we’re in for a
haunting horror thriller, and I can’t wait to see what the mad Dutchman has in
store.
The Neon Demon debuts in Cannes next
month, and Amazon Studios drops it into theaters later this year.
