Kristen Wiig has been slimed. That’s the general gist of the
first trailer for the female-fronted, Paul Feig-directed
Ghostbusters starring Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones,
and Kate McKinnon. Take a look at it after the jump.
There are things I like about this, and things I don’t, but
overall it looks like it could be fun. The McCarthy/Wiig stuff is more or less
them doing their thing, which I enjoy, so bonus. On the other hand, the
McKinnon/Jones moments all feel like leftover Saturday Night
Live bits, trying too hard to be wacky, which is worrisome. It also
over explains who the characters are, which feels unnecessary for a trailer,
but with as much flack as Ghostbusters has taken, I get the impulse.
I also kind of dig the weird Victorian carnival aesthetic of the ghosts.
I’m curious to see how this sets itself apart from the
original. There’s Ecto-1, they swap out the classic firehouse for what appears
to be an abandoned Chinese restaurant, and we get a glimpse of Chris Hemsworth’s
new Janine. There’s even an Exorcist joke and a Slimer
cameo. It certainly has the overall feel of a Paul Feig movie.
Let me know what you think of this
Ghostbusters trailer, and we’ll see for ourselves when hits
theaters July 15.
