The New 'Suicide Squad' Trailer Is Day-Glo And Hilarious

Our first look at DC’s supervillain team up SuicideSquad was something of an accident. The footage shown at San Diego Comic Con leaked out online and eventually DC and Warner Bros. simply released an HD version out of frustration because people kept watching the janky video. Last night, however, we got our first sanctioned look. Check it out below.

This is a very different animal from the first Suicide Squad trailer, which was a dark, gloomy affair and felt more in line with the tone of Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Instead, backed by Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” perhaps the most played out song in the history of humankind, this feels like a riff on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, or maybe even a swipe.

I’m curious to see if this winds up being the actual tone the movie or if this is just an invention of the marketing department, but it’s nice to know that the DC Extended Universe will have tonal options aside from dour. This certainly puts and emphasis on the brightly colored nature of the narrative and the humor, which is a welcome change from muted shades of grey.

With a tagline—Worst. Movie. Ever.—that’s a Simpsons joke, and everything else, it’s hard to tell if this trailer is in earnest or tongue-in-cheek, which will go a long way to determining how Suicide Squad turns out. But regardless of all that, this does look like a damn blast, and I’m still plenty pumped up to check this out.

Suicide Squad hits theaters August 5.
