The 2016 Oscar Nominations Are In, Make Of Them What You Will

At this point it’s cliché to say I don’t care about the Oscars. I obviously pay attention in an academic way—it’s my job, after all—and for spectacle’s sake, but that’s about as far as my interest really goes. The nominations for this year came out and they play out as you expect.

Some of the Academy’s choices I agree with, some I very much do not. To be honest, the only one I actually care about is Mad Max: Fury Road getting a Best Picture nomination because now we live in a world where a Mad Max movie, any Mad Max movie, has a shot at an Oscar. That’s pretty awesome. So it Sylvester Stallone’s nomination for Creed, which is well deserved, even if the movie got otherwise shut out.

There’s usually at least a couple WTF moments, but looking through this list there isn’t one that really stands out. And as usual, there are a lot of white people, like almost exclusively white people, so, you know, it’s a list of Oscar nominees.

The Academy Awards will air on February 28, hosted by Chris Rock. And without further ado, here’s the full list of nominees, make of it what you will.
