Any time you attach the name Ben Wheatley to a movie, you
have our undivided attention. The maniac behind genre twisters like
Sightseers, A Field in England, and
Kill List is back, which on its own is an exciting
prospect, but the fact that he adapted our favorite J.G. Ballard novel,
High-Rise, well that’s just peachy keen in our book. We
can’t think of anyone better to bring this book to life, and star Tom
Hiddleston just dropped a new trailer for us to enjoy.
Since debuting on the fall festival circuit,
High-Rise has split critical opinion, but we don’t really
care about that, because it looks great to our eyes. It looks like it captures
the dystopian tone, the strangeness that infuses life in a self-contained
modern high-rise apartment building, and the savage darkness that undercuts the
population.
Here’s the synopsis:
London, 1975. Robert Laing (Tom Hiddleston) is a young doctor seduced by the lifestyle in a high-rise, an isolated community, cut off from the rest of society in their luxury tower block, and its creator, the architect Anthony Royal (Jeremy Irons). Taking up residence on the twenty-fifth floor, Laing discovers a world of complex loyalties, and also strikes up a relationship with Royal’s devoted aide Charlotte (Sienna Miller). After Laing befriends Richard Wilder (Luke Evans), a documentary filmmaker relegated to the second floor who is determined to provoke the class injustices inherent in the high-rise, a dangerous social situation develops and the high-rise eventually fragments into violent tribes.
Right now, Magnet Releasing doesn’t have a U.S. date set for
High-Rise, but it will open across the pond on March 18.
