Movie Review: 'The Finest Hours'

When The Finest Hours, a movie about the true life heroism of a rag tag group of Coast Guard members battling a fierce New England storm in the early 1950s to save the stranded crew of a wrecked tanker, is actually about that, it’s not bad. Giant waves flinging various vessels around willy-nilly, a crew racing to the rescue, another struggling to stay afloat long enough for them to arrive; all of this works. The problem is whenever the movie does anything else.

Toshiya Fujita’s 1973 Japanese revenge flick is a huge influence, stylistically and content wise—Tarantino borrows characters, plot points, visual cues, and even the overall structure. The Punisher Is Getting His Own Netflix Series

Comic book fans everywhere are getting psyched that we’ll see Frank Castle, better known as the Punisher, in Netflix’s upcoming Daredevil Season 2. I’ve been waiting for decades for someone to get the character right (Punisher: War Zone is as close as anyone has come), and with the dark, gritty episodic nature of Daredevil, there’s hope this could be the one. But now there’s more, as Netflix and Marvel are reportedly working on a new, solo Punisher series.

Aokigahara Forest, also known as the Sea of Trees or the Suicide Forest, located at the base of Mount Fuji, has become a fascination for many. The dense woods are the most popular place in Japan for people to take their own lives, and reportedly one of the three most popular suicide destinations worldwide. Between that fact, the stunning natural geography that features unexplored ice caverns, and a historical link with demons and spirits in Japanese mythology, Aokigahara was ripe for a supernatural horror film. Director Jason Zada’s The Forest is that movie, and it squanders an interesting set up with a wealth of potential on a flat, bland, by-the-numbers genre outing.

Any time you attach the name Ben Wheatley to a movie, you have our undivided attention. The maniac behind genre twisters like Sightseers, A Field in England, and Kill List is back, which on its own is an exciting prospect, but the fact that he adapted our favorite J.G. Ballard novel, High-Rise, well that’s just peachy keen in our book. We can’t think of anyone better to bring this book to life, and star Tom Hiddleston just dropped a new trailer for us to enjoy.

If we’re being entirely honest, I have no idea why, in 2016 (in case you were curious, yes, I typed 2015 first), we’re talking about a xXx sequel, but here we are. As much as I love questionable action fare, the 2002 Vin Diesel-fronted, XTREME sports-centric flick is a total turd. It’s even more of a Mountain Dew commercial than the new Point Break (though it does still make me laugh that the villains are a group called Anarchy 99, that shit is gold). But apparently Vin Diesel wants this to happen, and when he puts him mind to it, things get done (see Riddick). And while it’s hard to condone this, they’ve added some legitimate badasses to the cast.
