Yes, one of the most fun movies I’ve seen so far this year,
the Canadian post-apocalyptic send up Turbo Kid, finally has
a release date. And to celebrate, the lunatics responsible for this one have
also unleashed an awesome new trailer. Check it out below.
A total blast, inventive, and ridiculously gory,
Turbo Kid is a fond jab at the cheap international
post-apocalyptic films of the early and mid-1980s, like 1990: The
Bronx Warriors, The New Barbarians, and
2019, After the Fall of New York, among others. Set in the
distant future of 1997, when acid rain (remember that?) and nuclear winter have
ravaged the world, the action revolves around an orphaned loner known as the
Kid (Munro Chambers from Degrassi: The Next Generation). He
keeps to himself, hangs out in his rad bomb shelter hideout, and scavenges.
Most of what he finds he trades for comic books, but when he meets a mysterious
weirdo named Apple, and she gets kidnapped, he has to tangle with the vicious
warlord Zeus (Michael Ironside), who juices people and participates in the
highest stakes arm wrestling matches you’ve ever seen. Ever higher stakes than
Over the Top. When the kid finds a powerful weapon, he must
channel his favorite comic book hero, Turbo Rider, to save the day.
Turbo Kid was one of my favorites at the
2015 Seattle International Film Festival, and now it will now hit theaters
(probably very few theaters) and VOD on August 28. This is definitely one to
check out. Watch the badass new trailer below.
