Neil Gaiman Will Write 'American Gods' Episodes For Starz

While NBC may have just shitcanned Hannibal, that doesn’t mean Bryan Fuller is going to rest on his laurels. He already has an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel American Gods brewing at Starz, and he revealed that Gaiman himself will write episodes, as in multiple episodes, of the show.

Talking to Collider at the recent Saturn Awards, which celebrate the best in genre entertainment across multiple platforms, Fuller revealed, “Neil Gaiman is going to be writing episodes of the show.” That doesn’t reveal much, but it’s exciting as hell. After all, who knows the subject matter better than geek favorite Gaiman, who has also written for Doctor Who, Neverwhere, and many more.

For those of you unfamiliar with American Gods, Gaiman’s Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novel is based on the idea that Gods, new and old, exist in reality because people believe. This includes Native spirits as well as those brought to American shores by immigrants from various countries. As time goes on and beliefs wane, they start to fade, supplanted by new Gods that arise, like technology, celebrity, drugs, and more. The action revolves around ex-con named Shadow is trying to stay out of trouble, but his wife is killed in an accident. On a plane on the way to her funeral he meets a mysterious stranger named Mr. Wednesday, who knows more about him than he should. And from there nothing will ever be the same as they criss cross the country meeting Wednesday’s strange colleagues.

The road-trip nature of the narrative seems tailor made for a TV series, and in Fuller’s hands, and now Gaiman’s as well, American Gods is one of our most anticipated shows looming on the horizon.
