If you grew up on Jem and the Holograms
and were excited about seeing the truly, truly, truly outrageous ‘80s cartoon
rendered in live action on a big screen later this year, this new trailer may
just bum you the fuck out.
If you’re expecting to see the Misfits, or Jem’s magic
earring, or even a group of empowered young women travelling the world rocking
out and making the world a better place, you’re going to be sorely disappointed
(even William Shatner noticed the lack of Misfits). Instead of any of the
things that make the cartoon rad, this is the story of a girl who puts a
mediocre song on YouTube and becomes famous overnight and has to cope with all
that entails. It’s like Josie and the Pussycats, only
without the satire, and, from what I can tell, with way shittier songs.
Maybe I had unrealistic expectations for a movie based on a
cult favorite cartoon from decades ago, but I can’t help but be disappointed by
what we see here. It’s truly outrageous, but not in a good way. Jem
and the Holograms hits theaters on October 23. Check out the new
incarnation of the rocker and see what you think.
