'Cub' Movie Review: A Dirty, Nasty Throwback Horror Film

Cub is not going to appeal to everyone, but if you’re looking for a nasty little horror throwback, you can do a lot worse than this Belgian flick. It’s certainly not afraid to get down and dirty and mean when it needs to, and fits nicely into the “kids go camping and find something scary they didn’t expect” subgenre.

While we don’t automatically crap all over every one of the glut of remakes or revisitations of beloved properties, we don’t usually excited. (Mad Max: Fury Road was an exception, and one that paid off big.) We are, however, rather psyched for Starz’ upcoming continuation of Evil Dead, Ash Vs. Evil Dead. The 41st Seattle International Film Festival is in full swing, and with more than 400 movies, it's a marathon and can be a big challenge to sift through everything. With that in mind, here are a quick reviews of films you may want to check out, or avoid as the case may be.

'San Andreas' Movie Review: As Fun As It Is Ridiculous

If you saw the trailers and TV spots of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson racing a boat up the face of a tsunami and weaving a helicopter in and out of collapsing skyscrapers, and thought to yourself, “This San Andreas movie looks pretty awesome,” then you are going to be really happy. If you had the opposite reaction, or are looking for nuanced characters, a unique and interesting plot, or any form of subtlety, you will not be. San Andreas is, however, exactly the movie that’s been advertised. This is Dwayne Johnson fighting a fucking earthquake, and as ridiculous as it is, it’s also a gleeful epic blast.

Marvel's 'Daredevil' Season 2 Is Adding An Important Character

The first season of Netflix’s Daredevil series was so good that it almost made me forget about the 2003 abomination (almost, that’s a wound that lingers). It was dark and gritty and got the characters right without just rehashing the comics; the action was, at times, as good as anything we’ve seen in years (that fight at the end of episode 2 is mind-blowing); and it delivered damn near everything I wanted as a lifelong fan of the Man Without Fear. Now it looks like Marvel is adding an important new character for season 2, Elektra.

'Point Break' Is Totally Going To Ruin Christmas

It probably comes as no surprise that Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 action opus Point Break is one of my all-time favorite movies. We’re talking top five, easy, right up there with Rubin & Ed, Out For Justice, and A Bittersweet Life. If you guessed that I’ve been skeptical about the impending remake, you are correct, and when they released that totally joyless, stone-faced trailer yesterday, it didn’t do anything to instill confidence. 'Poltergeist' Movie Review

1982’s Poltergeist is one of those movies that scared the hell out of you when you’re a kid. Maybe you’ve watched it a bunch of times since then, maybe you only have lingering memories of being traumatized by that little blond girl saying, “They’re heeerrree.” Regardless of your feelings, it’s the latest on chopping block to get the remake treatment, and as is so often the case in these situations, the first question that springs to mind is, why? And in this case, that’s an especially necessary question to ask.

'Tomorrowland' Movie Review

As much a I love dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and otherwise bleak science fiction—that’s kind of my jam if you missed my giddy excitement for Mad Max: Fury Road—the darkness and weight can get overwhelming from time to time. So I certainly understand where director Brad Bird and writer Damon Lindelof are coming from with Tomorrowland, trying to provide a more hopeful vision of the future. Unfortunately, I wish they’d stayed where they were instead of developing this smarmy, too-proud-of-itself movie.

'The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials' Trailer Is Nonstop Action And Peril

When it was released last summer, The Maze Runner was a surprise to many. Not only was it a hit, bigger than the much more expensive, much crappier Divergent, but it was actually good. (I read James Dashner’s dystopian young adult novel and remember not enjoying it, but thinking it would make a decent movie. And then it did, I’m like Nostradamus.) Profitable as it was, everyone wants a YA sci-fi franchise, and as such, the sequel, The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, hits later this year and just dropped a new trailer. Check it out below.

Anna Kendrick is awesome. If you watch either of the Pitch Perfect movies (FYI, Pitch Perfect 2, which opened this weekend, is delightful), you know how wonderful she is. 'Pitch Perfect 2' Movie Review: The Bellas Take On The World

Aca-believe it or not, I am not the target audience for Pitch Perfect. Shocking, I know, that a bearded, overweight, pushing-40, action movie enthusiast with a ratty beard is not the intended viewer for a movie about a group of teenage a cappella singers. Weird, right? But that hasn’t stopped me from watching the first film somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 times (it’s entirely likely this number is much larger—there was a ten day period where I watched it everyday, and a month where it was at least 20 times—separate occurrences—so who the hell knows at this point).

Often described as one long chase scene, that’s not an inaccurate portrayal, as it’s wall-to-wall visceral action, insane practical stunts, highly stylized production, with a more thoughtful take on the apocalyptic than you probably expect.

'Time Lapse' Movie Review: Don't Mess With Time

It’s easy, when you watch a time travel movie, to picture how you might use this technology in your own unique way to benefit yourself, and how you would skirt the hazards encountered by the folks onscreen. In Time Lapse, the new sci-fi movie from director Bradley King, three friends stumble across a camera that takes pictures 24 hours into the future, and they attempt to pull this off, not faring much better than those who came before them. This movie falls in the same general category as Colin Trevorrow’s Safety Not Guaranteed, a low-budget genre flick with more ideas than money that pop up at film festivals, and as long as they’re as good as that film and Time Lapse, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Kurt Russell's Horror Western 'Bone Tomahawk' Drops Its First Poster

Through Kurt Russell into a western and you’ve got our attention. Throw him into a horror western, and it’s like you’re reading our damn mind. And that’s just what we have with S. Craig Zahler’s directorial debut Bone Tomahawk, which, in addition to Russell, has an awesome cast that also includes Patrick Wilson, Sean Young, Matthew Fox, and Richard Jenkins. The Trailer For Turkish Horror 'SICCIN 2' Is Gnarly

I don’t speak a word of Turkish, so I have no idea what is going on in this trailer for SICCIN 2, but holy shit, whatever it is, it’s gnarly as hell. This is a rough watch. Seriously, there are creepy dolls, blood, evisceration, and all the usual horror movie trappings, but there are also what appear to be graphic suicides (including ingesting boiling food stuffs), the deep frying of babies, and assorted other nasty bits. Check it out for yourself below, you’ve been warned.

'Hot Pursuit' Movie Review

Hot Pursuit is an anomalous product in Hollywood, a female-fronted, female-directed action comedy. The easiest comparisons are Paul Feig’s recent films that take a typically male-centric subgenre give it a makeover. Director Anne Fletcher (The Guilt Trip, 27 Dresses) attempts to do for movies like 48 Hours and Midnight Run what Bridesmaids did for raunchy comedies. While there are some hilarious scenes, and leads Reese Witherspoon and Sophia Vergara have a strong chemistry, Hot Pursuit is never much more than a moderately entertaining temporary distraction.

BoneBat Comedy Of Horrors Film Festival 2015 Was A Damn Good Time

Mixing comedy and horror is a tricky proposition. For every Shaun of the Dead that hits, there are what feels like dozens of other films with the same idea that step up to the plate and whiff like a chubby asthmatic kid on his first at bat (not asthmatic, but I know a thing or two about being chubby and bad a baseball). Hence, putting together an entire festival of such films is a daunting task, but for the last five years, the BoneBat Comedy of Horrors Film Festival has done just that. The latest installment, Bone Bat V, went down last weekend and, as with previous years, it was a total blast.

'Pitch Perfect 2' Hits The World Stage With 2 Clips
