When you think of the Cannes Film Festival, you generally
think of the prestigious international pictures we’ll be talking about over the
next year. That’s a bit different this time around as George Miller’s
Mad Max: Fury Road will premiere at the 2015 fest. But the
strangest, most hair-singeing film promises to be Takashi Miike’s
Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War of the Underworld, and this
new trailer shows off a movie that’s even more bizarre than the title
indicates.
The story follows Akira, who finally realizes his dream of
joining the Yakuza, only to discover that it’s not quite like he expected it to
be. It’s more mundane than he thought, but the biggest surprise is that the
most powerful gangster around just so happens to be a vampire, yes, there’s a
blood-sucking hood running the show. And then there’s that dude in what looks
like a foam mascot suit shooting into the air and also getting blasted by a
truck with machine guns on the front.
I don’t speak Japanese, so I have little to no idea what the
hell is going on here, but I’m not entirely sure that would help all that much.
Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War of the Underworld premieres
during the Director’s Fortnight segment of Cannes, and it also stars Yayan
Ruhian of The Raid and The Raid 2, which
is always promising. Hopefully this will get distribution and show up in a way
more of us can see it before too long. Check out the trailer below.
