For a kid from the Pacific Northwest, of just the right age
to feel the full force of the impact, I never got super into Nirvana. They were
fine, and you can’t help but recognize the massive impact they had, and
continue to have, on popular culture, but I never mooned over them like much of
my generation. That doesn’t, however, mean I don’t find Kurt Cobain a fascinating
figure, and as such, I’m totally intrigued to watch the new documentary,
Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, which just dropped a new trailer
after debuting at Sundance.
The intimate look at the man behind the public persona
gathered rave reviews coming out of the festival, and uses home video,
interviews, news footage, and more to create a portrait of the troubled,
brilliant Cobain. According to many who saw it in Park City, it’s even an
illuminating document for those out there who think they know the subject back
to front, something every documentary strives for but few achieve.
Right now, the film is on the festival circuit, with the next
stop being SXSW in Austin. There have been rumors floating around of a limited
theatrical release, but those are unconfirmed at this stage, and director Brett
Morgen’s Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck is scheduled to
premiere on HBO on May 4. Watch the trailer below.
