Ahhhh…the new season of Justified starts
tonight. Sure, it’ll be bittersweet to see one of the best shows of the last
decade kick off its sixth and final season, but you know what trumps that?
New episodes of Justified, that’s what. If you haven’t been
watching over the last five seasons, and you have even an inkling of affection
for badasses onscreen, you’ve been wasting your time.
Based on an Elmore Leonard character that appears in novels
like Pronto and Riding the Rap, and short
stories like “Fire in the Hole,” Justified follows the
adventures of U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens, played with perfect swagger by
Timothy Olyphant, as he dispenses his own brand of old west style justice in
the backwoods of Harlan County, Kentucky. When the first episode has white
supremacist blowing up a church with a rocket launcher, you know you’re onto
something special.
Raylan is an anachronism, a mythological frontier
gunslinger, a shoot-first kind of lawman, and Justified is
essentially a western set in the modern world, hitting the right pitch note for
note. There are grim villains, primarily Walton Goggins’ small town crime boss
Boyd Crowder, whip smart dialogue, and plenty of opportunities for tough, grim
dudes to face off with life and death on the line.
Justified is easily the most badass show
on your television box, and if you’re not watching, you’re doing yourself a
disservice. Season 6 premieres tonight, January 20 on FX at 10:00pm. Which
means they can swear.
