AMC Orders A 'Preacher' Pilot

With The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and Mad Men, AMC has proven their not afraid to take risks, and they’re going to get the chance to show that once again. The network has ordered a pilot based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s comic Preacher.

There has been talk for  years about bringing this to the big screen, and HBO even bandied about the idea of a series—I’m a fan of the idea of comics being adapted for television, the two episodic nature of the two mediums has always felt like a better fit than trying to cram years worth of mythology into a single movie, or even a series of movies. Now sources near Badass Digest report that this might finally come to pass.

Preacher follows Jesse Custer, a small town minister with a penchant for booze and violence—if you had his family, so would you. Things take an interesting turn, however, when he comes into contact with the child of a demon and an angel. The entity escaped from heaven and fuses with Custer, giving him the Word of God, the power to make people obey his every word.

So Jesse, his badass girlfriend Tulip, and their pal Cassidy, a hard-drinking Irish vampire, set out to track down God in order to make the father of the world atone for his own sins. Along they way they battle secret sects, fish-fucking rednecks, a guy named Arseface whose face does look like an ass, the patron saint of murderers, and, of course, the inbred, poop-flinging descendent of Jesus Christ. As you can imagine, Preacher is filthy and heretical, and it’ll take some serious stones for an adaptation to stay true to the source. And yeah, the journey is just as much fun as it sounds.
